| Two Department of Correction Offenders pass away due to COVID-19 virus |

Two Department of Correction offenders passed away on Monday, May 4, 2020 from complications related to the novel coronavirus. They are the fourth and fifth individuals under the supervision of the Department of Correction to pass away from the disease. Due to medical privacy laws, the names of the individuals are not being released. The first of the two offenders passed away early Monday morning. A 60-year-old man who transferred to the UCONN Health Center on April 20, 2020 after testing positive for the virus. The individual last entered the correctional system on April 3, 2012 and was serving a 14-year sentence for Burglary in the First Degree. The offender, who was eligible for parole in 2023, also had an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer. The second individual to pass away from complication due to the novel coronavirus was a 51-year-old individual who was transferred to the Northern Correctional Institution’s Medical Isolation Unit on April 24, 2020. On Sunday, May 3, 2020 he was taken via ambulance to an area hospital where on Monday morning, he succumbed to his illness. He last entered the Connecticut correctional system on June 15, 1992 and was serving a 42 year, six-month sentence for Murder. His release date was in March of 2034. “This is truly a sad day for our agency. Governor Lamont has long been saying that deaths form the COVID-19 virus are the lagging indicator of the pandemic, I certainly hope these are the last individuals under our care that succumb to this disease,” said Commissioner Cook. “May they rest in peace.” |
