Board of Correction puts out-of-state contract up for bid

BOISE — The Idaho Board of Correction on Monday approved a request for proposal for a contract with a private prison company to house inmates out of state.

That contract would take the place of the current emergency contract the department has with the GEO Group, a Florida-based private prison company managing two facilities on Idaho’s behalf in Texas. Altogether, the company manages the housing of almost 700 Idaho inmates in Texas. The Idaho Department of Corrections pays the company $69.95 per inmate per day for the service.

That contract is set to expire in October 2020. It was a two-year emergency contract and, as corrections director Josh Tewalt has told the Idaho Press previously, the department had to agree to the company’s terms because it needed beds for its burgeoning prison population.
