Inmates escape after power malfunction caused cells to unlock

One inmate facing murder charges remains at large after escaping from a South Carolina jail.

According to WIS, three inmates broke free from the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center on Saturday after an electrical short opened a pod’s cell doors and a number of incarcerated individuals overpowered the guard.

The Washington Post reports that from there “one of the inmates simply walked up to the malfunctioning control panel and mashed buttons until more doors opened.”
