Gov. Kay Ivey signs prison health care contract |

Gov. Kay Ivey has signed a contract with Wexford Health Sources to provide — and, officials hope, improve — medical and mental health care for more than 20,000 inmates in the state’s prison system. The governor’s office Monday confirmed she had signed the contract, worth north of $360 million over two-and-a-half years, after the Joint Legislative Contract Review Committee Friday released it from an earlier hold. The state faces an order from U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson to address a “horribly inadequate” mental health care situation, and a separate lawsuit over medical care. “I was not going to push us into a situation where we were in violation of Judge Thompson’s order and not have a federal takeover of our prison system,” Rep. Jack Williams, R-Vestavia Hills, the chair of the committee, said Monday. “We would have been under receivership of the court for a long time.” Read More. |
