| Prison officer shortage national; unfilled positions exceed 500 in Arkansas |

Fielding questions from lawmakers last week about the state's struggles to find and retain corrections officers, prisons Director Wendy Kelley responded with a simple defense: Arkansas isn't the only state with a problem. The number of unfilled corrections officer positions at the Department of Correction has grown to more than 500, more than a tenth of the total prison workforce. The vacancies are most pronounced at several maximum security units, including Varner, the home of the state's death row. At the same time, the department has responded to more frequent outbreaks of assaults and violence, though Kelley has maintained that under-staffing was often not the root cause of those incidents.
